Why I Created Ancestral Skin Balm
My journey into natural wellness began long before Holistic Herbals was created.
As a mum, I became increasingly aware of the ingredients found in many everyday products and started questioning what I was putting on my family’s skin. This led me to explore traditional ingredients that had been used for generations before modern skincare became filled with synthetic additives.
Ancestral Skin Balm was born from a desire to create something beautifully simple, deeply nourishing and made with ingredients you can recognise and understand.

What is tallow balm, and why use it on the skin?
Our tallow balm is a deeply nourishing, multipurpose skin salve made from grass-fed, hand-rendered and purified tallow, gently scented with therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Tallow is incredibly rich in:
- Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
- Essential fatty acids
- Nutrients that closely mimic your skin’s natural oils
It deeply moisturises, soothes dryness, and supports skin repair without clogging pores - making it a natural match for human skin.
What can I use it for?
Tallow balm is beautifully versatile. Use it as:

What does it smell like?
We scent our balm using pure essential oils only - no artificial fragrance. The natural scent will vary slightly depending on the blend, but it’s always subtle, skin-safe, and balanced to complement the natural richness of the tallow. We also offer anunscented tallow which has a neutral smell.
Will it make my skin feel greasy?
Tallow melts into the skin effortlessly and absorbs beautifully without a greasy finish. Just use a small amount, and warm it between your fingers before applying - it spreads easily and soaks in quickly.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes - it’s incredibly gentle and well tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive, reactive, or eczema-prone skin. We don’t use any synthetic additives, preservatives, or perfumes.
If you’re concerned, we always suggest a patch test first - especially if you’re sensitive to essential oils.
How is the tallow made?
We render and purify the tallow completely by hand, using traditional slow methods to remove impurities while preserving all its skin-loving nutrients. Our tallow comes from ethically sourced, grass-fed UK-raised animals, and nothing is wasted in the process.
How long does it last and how should I store it?
Tallow is shelf-stable and naturally preserved, especially with the help of antioxidant-rich essential oils.
- Keep your balm in a cool, dry place (no need to refrigerate unless your home gets very warm).
- Best used within 6 months of opening.
You’ll usually use it up well before then!
Is it vegan?
No - tallow is an animal-based fat. However, it’s a traditional, zero-waste ingredient that honours the whole animal and avoids the synthetic or palm-based ingredients often found in commercial skincare.
It’s ideal for those seeking an ancestral, whole-food approach to skin health.

This has been amazing as a multipurpose balm, I've used it on my eldest sons eczema, my youngest sons nappy area and also for myself when my skin has felt particularly dry.
